What does the name ‘Beyond Edges’ mean?

As a Coach, my goal is to help clients achieve their goals, understand themselves more deeply, and explore what is possible for them so they can live their best life.  We accomplish this when we venture beyond the edges of our comfort zone.

I have been studying ‘adult developmental theory’ for the past year.  We used to believe that once we hit adulthood, as defined by age, our ‘development’ ceased to continue.  In the last several decades, theorists, particularly Robert Kegan (Developmental Psychologist), have come to understand that we continue to develop well into adulthood and for our whole lives.  Kegan suggests there are stages of adult development and where we are on our developmental journey will affect how we see ourselves, others and respond to the world around us.

Transformational coaching can contribute to our adult developmental journey.  Increased insights, a deepened awareness and a new perspective can help us grow and evolve to see ourselves, those around us and our life through a different, more complex, and meaningful lens. How exciting is that!

All people have limits or ‘edges’ of understanding, development, thinking and awareness.   These edges may be conscious or unconscious. Following are examples of when we may bump up against a developmental edge:

  • when we feel stuck,
  • lack confidence,
  • can’t solve a problem or make a decision,
  • are in conflict with someone,
  • experience a difficult life situation,
  • feel like a victim, or
  • experience an ‘aha’ moment.

We all have blind spots and ‘don’t know what we don’t know’.

It is not easy for humans to see or access new insights on their own.  Our brains are pattern seeking machines that love comfortable thought patterns and will quickly rationalize and find ways to validate our present thinking.   These established thought patterns keep us safe and comfy with ‘what comes next’.  This is where the coaching process comes in.  Coaching is the catalyst to shake things up and disrupt those entrenched thinking patterns so the magic of your amazing mind can be revealed.   How cool is that?

The magic happens when we go beyond edges, beyond our present awareness and understanding, and take that leap outside our comfort zone to a new place where anything is possible.

Going Beyond Edges = New Awareness, New Thinking, New Possibilities
